Every homeschooled student should have portfolio. It should contain copies of materials used for each subject, sample of work, and worksheets. Folders should be labeled and  preserved for two years, if you live in Florida. Some states do not require a portfolio. . In my opinion, required or not, having a portfolio is a really good idea.

What is a portfolio?

A portfolio is simply a sample of a students work for the year. Some states allow parents to turn in their child's portfolio, in lieu of standardized test scores.

Floridas school board requires a standardized test or teacher's evaluation.  The portfolio must also be available for inspection upon 15 days  written notice.

Keep in mind that a portfolio can be as elaborate or as plain as you want.   A portfolio can be taken to the superintendents office by the parents or a representative, and there is no need for children to be present.  The superintent's office never requested to review our portfolios.
A portfolio might include:
  • Samples of academic work for each subject.
  • Test, worksheets, or project grades.
  • Photos of field trips, sports activities, and science projects.
  • Copies of material covered by  subject. (I made copies of the table of contents for each book.)
  •  List of field trips, books read, and extracurricular activities.
  • List of documentaries watched.
  • Description of projects and achievements.
  • Volunteer and shadowing experiences.
  • A transcript is always a plus.
  • If classes are taken outside of the home, ask the teacher for an end-of-year evaluation and add it to the portfolio.
  • Have the child write his or her name and date on each test and assignment. Add  to the portfolio.
  • We also included a copy of the novel my son wrote and Boy Scouts awards.

Here is the portable case file that I used.

  1. Portfolios are not required in Montana, but I think it is valuable for me to keep some of the materials you mentioned in case there is ever accusation of neglect. Also it is fun for us to look back to see what we've done. I expect to be much more detailed in my records once my children are high school age. Any thoughts for me? J.E. from Polson Montana

    1. Although we are required to keep a portfolio in Florida, the school district very rarely request to see it. As you mentioned above, it is a good idea to have it in case the state has any doubts or if you ever have to put your child back in school. When my son was interviewing for Florida Atlantic University High School, the counselor looked at every page of his portfolio. Everyone who had the interview the previous day, told us not to bother with the portfolio because nobody will look at it. Well, I guess they decided to check my son’s portfolio.
I used the “Smead Expanding Portable Case File” from Home Depot (see picture.) It is an inexpensive ($6.00) solution and you will have enough pockets to put all the necessary school samples. Homeschool portfolios should be done for each calendar school year. A portfolio should document the student’s college preparatory work. It is important to understand that even with all the required exams and test results, some colleges require homeschoolers to submit a portfolio.
Georgia Perimeter College’s Portfolio requirement (from their website):
Home School Portfolio. This requirement applies to homeschool students completing non-regionally accredited homeschool programs.
o Homeschool applicants must submit a Home School Portfolio Summary form (http://admissions.gpc.edu/home_school_portfolio_summary_form.pdf) along with supporting documentation. The summary form and documentation must substantiate completion of all Required High School Curriculum units. Failure to submit adequate supporting documentation will delay the processing of the application.
o Official transcripts from any regionally accredited homeschool program or conventional public or private high schools attended should be submitted if applicable.
Not all universities require a portfolio, so check with the ones you are interested in applying to.

  2. In Alabama there is no requirement to keep a portfolio, however, I have been keeping them anyway because you never know who or when they will knock on your door to ask fpr them. I also do assessment testing which many people around here turn a blind eye to. Being prepared is never bad.

    1. Agree! Always be prepared. Assessment tests will offer a snapshot of student's academic skills. In addition, it offers an opportunity for the parent to perfect their curricular decision, by evaluating how students are progressing in specific academic areas. It can be used as a diagnostic tool to create an intervention.

  3. We don't have to keep portfolios here in Arkansas, but for safety measures in case we are ever questioned I keep a pile of several things they did that year. I also keep all their Abeka grading forms to show that there is some type of accountability.

    1. Ann-Marie, I agree. If you ever have to put your children back in school, you will have some samples of work they have done. My son was asked to show samples of school work when he went to high school.
