FAU High School

Florida Atlantic University High School, located on the Boca Raton FAU campus, offers a dual enrollment program for highly advanced students. They spend their ninth grade school year in the high school building taking advanced classes (including dual enrollment). These classes are designed to prepare them for a full time university load from tenth through twelfth grade. High school freshmen or sophomores can also apply to the program.
By the time students finish high school, they will have a minimum of three years of college credits. Some students even receive their bachelor degree before they finish high school. Students are required to take two Spanish college classes (four credits each) and they choose college electives for additional credits. My son took Mechatronics (three credits) and introduction to engineering (three credits) in ninth grade.  The engineering class was taught by a professor at the university in the engineering building. By the time my son finished ninth grade, he had earned 14 college credits.
Students can take up to 14 college credits, while in ninth grade. By the time they finish high school, they will have a minimum of 3 years of college credits. This school is homeschool friendly. I prepared my own transcript and they did not question anything on it.  It is a very competitive and highly selective program, since students come all the way from Miami to Palm Beach. When my elder son applied, there were a total of 2,200 students competing for 140 spots. The interview process is intense.
It is an arduous academic program, but most students thrive in this environment. Students are allowed to take up to 18 university credit hours per semester once they start tenth grade. If they want to go over the 18 credits, they  need approval from their counselor.
Students need to take the Accuplacer test while in eighth grade and the university requires a minimum test score of 90 for reading comprehension, sentence skills, and elementary algebra.

The high school offers many sports. My younger son participated in varsity soccer, track and field, and varsity swimming.  My older son was in varsity soccer and track and field. Just as with all other high schools, FAU High School required 100 hours of service hours before graduation.

Imagine your child earning a full college scholarship (including books and fees) at age 14. There was only a $550 fee per year  which covers the yearbook and expenses for clubs and sports.  Students have the same “high school experience” (only the good experiences) as any other high schools. They can participate in  sports, clubs, National Honor Society, open mic night, dance, graduation party, and other activities.

Some of the clubs offered to students at FAU High School are: The Asian Culture Club, Fitness Club, Future Educators of America (FEA), Interact Club, International Thespian Society, MakersSpace, Math Ambassador, Mock Trial, Model United Nations Club, Science Olympiad, Student Athlete Leadership, and Student Government.
